
ORATORICAL
The purpose of The American Legion’s National High School Oratorical Contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.
Start an Oratorical Contest for your children at your Post. Post 85 has joined with Post 220, Post 206, and Post 274 in Calvert County to sponsor a county oratorical contestant. The winner of this contest won $100.00 and the oportunity to compete at the District Level contest. Second place received $75.00 and is the backup for the District Level Contest. The runner up contestants recieved $50.00 each and good experience for future challenges. ( see our PHOTO GALLERY for pictures of the Calvert County Contestants and presentation of prizes.)
The Oratorical Contests for the State of Maryland at the Post level and District level are complete. The American Legion Department of Maryland Oratoical Contest at the State competion level was held at the Mount Airy Maryland Senior Citizens Center Sunday March 4, 2007. There were six contestants from the seven Maryland American Legion Districts. These folks did an outstanding job presenting their topics. The prize for first place was $2,500.00 and entry into the National contest. The second place contestant won $1,000.00 and is the backup should the first place winner not be able to compete at the National Contest. The four runner up contestants won $500.00 each and got good experience for their next challenge. (see the PHOTO GALLERY for pictures of the event.)
